What Is My Job

At Wegmans, we take pride in our ability to educate our customers and provide them with unique products they can’t find anywhere else. As a Team Leader in the Perishable areas (including but not limited to Cheese, Seafood, Meat, Deli, Produce and Bakery), you’ll assist in running the department and will work with team members to develop their skills and passions, expanding and sharing your knowledge of a wide variety of unique cheese products from around the world.

Providing Incredible, Knowledge Based Customer Service

Lead employees by example to provide incredible customer service by proactively approaching customers at the service counter and sharing your knowledge to help them find the perfect variety to accompany their meal Use passion and knowledge and additional information about countries of product origin, to educate both team members and customers; ensuring they have the tools needed to make, or help make, great meals easy

Ensuring High Quality Products & Ingredients

Maintain the overall appearance of the department, ensure cases are well-merchandised consistent with company standards; showcasing freshness and the wide variety of unique offerings, highlighting featured and premiere products Educate team members on the proper ways to handle, cut and trim cheese to reduce the amount of waste in the department Educate and ensure team members are properly handling products, using equipment and keeping accurate logs in accordance with food safety and safety guidelines

Continuously Improving Results

Perform tasks essential to the proper functioning of the department including ordering with Simplification practices in mind, scheduling and managing payroll Assist employees in setting up demos in the department, ensuring the right employee is performing demos and working to develop interesting, unique demo ideas to educate customers about different varieties of products and ways to enjoy them Work across departments to cross merchandise product; help team set and achieve financial goals for the department Maintain open lines of communication with team members and manager to ensure smooth department operations

What skills, learnings, and experiences are required?

Customer service experience, preferably in a food service, grocery or retail setting Developing others by providing encouragement to folks to take on tasks that challenge them and align with their personal career goals while holding frequent development discussions using performance and career development tools to coach employees who need help and further development Demonstrating an ability to manage others by working with employees to set and achieve goals, rewarding performance while exercising courage when providing honest, timely, and actionable feedback Control inventory levels and expenses such as payroll and shrink to impact bottom-line contribution (profit) for the department Work towards continuous improvement to encourage change; find ways to increase profitability and productivity; and improve processes, products & customer service in the department(s) Use data analysis, wisdom, experience, judgment, and past actions as well as input from other sources for decision making, always considering the impact on customers, sales and contribution (profit) Practice proper action planning techniques which include managing time and resources, and breaking down work into milestones to accomplish priority activities Maintain a safety focus by ensuring safety standards are followed, teaching safety practices to employees, looking for ways to improve safety, solving safety problems, and looking for ways to exceed safety standards and reduce risk potential Demonstrate customer relations skills by building relationships with customers and practicing good judgment in ensuring customer satisfaction Practice proper ordering techniques to complete orders by deadlines and participate in inventory process to ensure items are available to support merchandising programs and product promotions Exhibit merchandising skills by attractively displaying products considering seasonality, cross-merchandising opportunities and corporate programs with the aim of educating and enticing customers Assist with meal preparation and planning by providing customers with proper serving guidelines and recommending correct cooking techniques, helping to make great meals easy

What skills, learnings, and experiences are preferred and will set me apart?

Managerial/ supervisory experience Working knowledge of a variety of cheeses and the cheese industry Knowledge of and passion for cheese, beverages and pairings

Work Environment

Work includes walking, standing for up to 4 hours without a break, repetitive hand and arm movements including forceful pulling, occasional heavy lifting, bending, and reaching, along with continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment. Work involves exposure to various environments, including cold temperatures. The average weight range of items lifted is 10–30 pounds with a maximum weight lifted of greater than 50 pounds occasionally. You may receive assistance with heavy items, if available. May be exposed to various allergens (things that may cause an allergic reaction) Work includes the safe and proper handling of knives and cutting equipment Work may include use of hand pallet jack, power pallet jack, power walkie-reach, scissors lift or WAV unit. Wegmans certification required for use of power equipment
