Founded in 1919, AUC moved to a new 270-acre state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo in 2008. The University also operates in its historic downtown facilities, offering cultural events, graduate classes, and continuing education. Student housing is available in New Cairo. Among the premier universities in the region, AUC is Middle States accredited; its Engineering programs are accredited by ABET, its Chemistry program is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, and the School of Business is accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. The AUC Libraries contain the largest English-language research collection in the region and are an active and integral part of the University's pursuit of excellence in all academic and scholarly programs. The Digital Humanities Librarian plans, leads, and coordinates Digital Humanities initiatives at AUC, and works to build an institutional infrastructure to support digital research in the humanities by faculty, students and researchers.
The Digital Humanities Librarian will work with these groups to generate innovative Digital Humanities projects using RBSCL content. S/he will provide instruction in the use of digital tools, working directly with faculty and students.
This collaboration will result in projects that highlight AUC holdings of unique research materials, and broaden access to these collections. It is expected that the results of the Digital Humanities research projects will be published on an ongoing basis, thereby enhancing AUC's international reputation as a center for scholarship and research.
The Digital Humanities Librarian will serve as a leader for Digital Humanities in Egypt. S/he will establish and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and researchers in Egypt, and abroad, creating and maintaining a network of Digital Humanists with an interest in Egypt and the Middle East. S/he will train others in the AUC community and beyond in the use of digital tools and research methods, though regular workshops or courses.
This position will be instrumental in documenting, developing, and promoting best practices and professional standards in Digital Humanities scholarship, in collaboration with local and regional partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
Works to establish and maintain AUC's reputation as a center or expertise in the Digital Humanities.
Investigates current theory, tools, and best practices in Digital Humanities, and applies them to AUC programs.
Develops, documents, and promotes best practices where these don't exist already.
Collaborates with Library, CLT, and HUSS faculty and students to develop and promote digital scholarship.
Provides end user support for resources and services offered by the AUC Libraries.
Coordinates digital graduate research support.
Provides individual digital scholarship research consultations for humanities students and faculty. Markets these services to humanities academic departments.
With the University Archivist, Digital Collections Archivist and Reprographic Services Department of RBSCL, identifies and facilities acquisition and digital conversion of humanities manuscript collections. Also assists in the creation of metadata for digital collections (DARR and RBSCL Digital Collections).
Participates in collaborative Digital Humanities initiatives with other institutions.
Actively seeks to develop new institutional collections and partnerships.
Prepares grant proposals to secure intramural and external funding for DH initiatives.
Designs presentations and class instruction on themes in the Digital Humanities.
Convenes at least one public workshop each semester.
Maintains highly professional communication with outside stakeholders, through a blog, listserv, and any other appropriate tools.
Formulates and recommends departmental policies.
Coordinates documentation of procedures and services.
Prepares and submits reports to Administration as requested.
Teaches sections of the LALT course and other information literacy sessions as time permits
Monitors and evaluates service quality as a part of the Public Services team
Assumes other responsibilities as required or requested.
