Chief Health and Safety Officer, Environmental Health & Safety

Reports to: VP for Management and Operations

Purpose

The Chief Health and Safety Officer will provide strategic, visionary leadership, and progressive management for all environmental health and safety functions inclusive of emergency planning. The Chief Officer will ensure meeting world-class standards. The scope of responsibility covers both university campuses as well as other AUC owned or leased facilities.

Principal Accountabilities:

- Provide subject matter expertise on environmental health and safety issues to University’s administration and the overall community.

- Set the vision, strategy, and direction for the University’s environmental health and safety with a strategic understanding of future needs.

-  Lead, develop, implement and maintain all environmental health and safety programs, policies and procedures based on leading indicators and actions.

- Create a safety culture by developing safety systems, policies and procedures, safety campaigns, and programs to eliminate, prevent/control hazards, acts or behaviors.

-  Lead the development of the university systems and required enhancements to support tracking and reporting of health & safety records. Conduct trend analysis and sets a system for compliance documentation.

-  Set and enforce campus safety plans including all campus locations that involves student, faculty and staff (i.e. school labs and workshops, maintenance workshops, athletics facilities, student housing, faculty housing etc…)

-  Overview assessments, inspections and audits to monitor compliance with H&S protocols.

-  Partner with other offices to ensure that corrective and/or preventive measures are installed, completed and maintained.

-  Ensure the adequate assessment, prevention and management of H&S issues and risks arising from operations, incidents, university service lines, including inspecting, assessing, monitoring, investigating, and recommending corrective action.

-  Supervise, coach, and mentor the professional development of EHS management team.

-  Manage and direct crisis situations on campus and lead response team until crisis has led to recovery.

-  Oversee emergency coordination on all campus sites.

-  Lead the effort to create a sustainability vision for the University encompassing people, profit and campuses.

-  Secure and leverage senior level commitment and support for integrating sustainable development into core processes and decision-making.

Requirements:

Minimum education requirement: 

o  Bachelor’s Degree in environmental management or a related field.

o  Master’s Degree in related field is an asset.

Experience:

o At least 15 years of progressive management experience.

o Advanced Certification in Health, Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene related field.

o Must possess knowledge and experience in public safety accreditation.

Skills:

o  Knowledge of global EHS regulations and extensive practical experience in the installation of EHS management systems.

o  Strong leadership, management, communication and influencing skills.

o  High Communication, organization, attention to detail skills.

o  Demonstrated knowledge in emergency response procedures.

o  Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
